The Watchtower, Scholar and Misrepresentation of Source References
by AlanF inour resident pretend-jw-scholar who calls himself "scholar" enjoys justifying lying and misrepresentation by the watchtower society and himself.
the society, out of one side of its collective mouth, recommends not misrepresenting source references, yet out of the other side, goes ahead and does so without hesitation whenever it is convenient.
the society understands that unfair quoting is dishonest.

When this reader decides that the information is factual, based on a misquote (there can be NO other way to view this; Thiele does does does trust Ptolemy) and that Thiele does not regard Ptolemy as accurate, this is good in your eyes, Scholar???
Scholar, does Thiele believe in Ptolemy's accuracy or NOT?
I can have some amount of empathy for scholar, being that I've debated on net boards my views on God, creation, the Bible, etc. and been either the only one or maybe one of 2-3 at most others that shared my views and had about an impossible time trying to keep up with responses by 10-20 others, and I've felt no matter what I wrote it wouldn't make any difference due to the other view having so many adherents...
BUT it does seem Scholar is really trying hard to defend some things that have been demonstrated to be untrue to probably any neutral reader. Scholar, you might have to go through some things like I have, having to wonder sometimes if indeed what evidence I've seen proves the other side's point, and like me, if you sincerely look into these matters and honestly come out knowing for certain your views were correct, then that would only strengthen your faith in the WT.
Otherwise, you're doing the opposite of making the WT seem defensible via trying to defend things already hopelessly proven wrong and likely strengthening the view that WT proponents will say almost anything to uphold the WT as being God's reliable source of information; I might relent on one point you made about the ID movement just getting started during the time that Creator book came out, though I'm not a JW (married to one) and so don't know much about the book or exactly when major ID proponents started coming to the forefront with their views.

vivid memory with confusing contradiction...
by zanex ini had a very clear dream the other night and it continues to play itself out in my mind again and again...i can recall with sharp clarity years ago when i was 12 and very much impressed with my father...he turned to me and said something i will never forget...i had asked him what he wanted...just in general and he told me that he wanted "more" he was not real clear as to what the "more" was and at the time i didnt understand but now, pushing 30, i know what he meant by that.
at the same time tho he is a jw elder and locked into a box that will never allow him to achieve the ultimate fruition of what he wants.
as a member of that org the one thing that has always set him apart as a person is the one thing that he will never be allowed to cultivate...the desire to learn more and to be set apart by that study and wisdom is something that he has always thrived on so it seems rather odd to me that he would do something so contradictory to who he is as a person...lol.

hey leo....how did the test go
Sorry; just saw this thread again before logging off soon for the night. I think it went pretty well, but in that class, some things can be a little decieving when it comes time to get the papers handed back!
Hope your night's going great as well as for some different dreams for Zanex~!

How Can I Reassure Him?
by misspeaches ini have a friend who has been raised a jdub all his life.
he is what you would classify as 'weak' and leading a double life.
in fact he has admitted to me that he is gay and had some gay encounters.

You can tell him that there are also current, active JW's here, and there are others that have never been JW's, such as myself, that might be married to JW's, just interested in WT-related problems, etc...
Also, it might be worth it to get him to confront the reality that the WT will never accept homosexuals (unless of course some miraculous "new light" emerges. lol) and that he WILL have to face up to that at some point, and he might as well start inspecting whether or not the WT is the "Truth" after all. One way to quickly get him to see some major problems is by getting him to look into all the major false prophecies and predictions the WT has made in the past... all failed (if the links don't work, please copy and past them, and they will work that way!):
http://www.freeminds.org/history/history.htm
See the links in the box to the right dealing with prophecies? Check those out! Also, here's a link to the book, "Millions Now Living Will Never Die," which is where some really interesting links about the 1925 prophecy about the major patriarchs being ressurrected can be found:
http://www.strictlygenteel.co.uk/millions/millions.html
There may be some threads with people that are ex-JWs that are gay on this forum, too, though I wouldn't know how to find them. The search option never works for me. Even if he does look into things and agrees there are problems, then he'd have to face the likelihood of being DF'd and possibly not being able to talk to family and/or friends that are active JW's. I wish the best!

What about the ACLU? Sure they're liberals, but I think they might give you advice for free.
Or maybe their rivals, the ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) that Jay Sekalow (sp?) is over. They take up a lot of Christian cases (and I think maybe Jewish ones, etc.).

Welcome to the forum.
And I totally agree with the great responses you've had so far. As one married to a currently disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witness wife, she's even told me she never would have viewed "apostate" material such as that presented on this site if she wasn't already DF'd. As long as he is a JW, there is likely very little chance he'd ever be willing to look at any other views, or else I'd recommend him checking out this forum as well as freeminds.org, etc. to look at the WT's past history foul-ups, doctrinal problems, etc...
That being said, I agree that basically he will be viewed in a negative light for associating with you and, from my undestanding, might even possibly be in danger of being DF'd himself as a result of your relationship if you don't end up playing along with their scenario. Maybe others with more knowledge will chime in. That being likely the case, he would in essence have to make a decision between you and the WT unless you decided to go along with things WT-related.
I pray you'll make the best decision, and if that is to separate, that you will have peace knowing that you've done your part, and that would be kinda' hard for him to feel like he's giving up on God (though in actuality, the WT society) for you, much like you'd probably not want to feel you've sold your soul to be together with another person. If he can't at least look into some information critical of the WT, such as their own past failed prophecies and predictions, then he's likely not going to be ready to give up the WT any time soon.
I know this saying is going to sound really lame right now, but it is totally true: there are definitely other fish in the sea (and MANY of them), and I believe you will be able to find someone who will be able to love you without the WT conditions applying and that you can actually share religious feelings with rather than feeling divided for a lifetime.
God bless, and best wishes,
Leonard

Ay caramba, there are two Leo's around here...
But you were here first~!
Actually, my name is Leonard.
Oh, yeah; do you know a Jon Gnash? When I linked a thread from here to harmony-central, the guy with that name (or at least his moniker is Jon Gnash) asked if you were still here, and I replied saying I was pretty sure you were, thinking the moniker-name sounded familiar, and I asked if he was an ex-JW, but he must've already been gone for the day and I never got another reply.
Anyway, good to meet you~!

TOOL, TOOL, and more TOOL
Some musicians over at the forum I linked that are totally into Tool are also heavily into the Mars Volta. I haven't listened to a whole lot of either band but take it there must be at least some things in common between the two.

hmmm...well I have been listenin to a band called crossfade...just some good ol rock. Am always in the mood for pink floyd tho...and when I am just bein good ol zan I break out the Korn...sigh...some things just cant change..
-Z-
Yeah; Crossfade reminds me a bit of Disturbed, though they still have something of their own going on. I bought their disc and really like the 3rd song on the disc (the "other" song they play on the radio) and was going to learn it but never got the much heavier guage set of strings needed on one of my guitars to learn it. Oh; Head from Korn got saved and quit Korn: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=869844&highlight=Korn (may have to copy and paste the link to make in work in the web address bar).
I used to love Pink Floyd but got burned out on them when I was stuck with only 3 8-track tapes for about a year at about 12 or 13 yoa = Pink Floyd's the Wall, the Police's Zenyatta Mandata, and Rush's Permanent Waves.

Old school metal and anything RUSH
Yeah -- same here~! If you're a musician (or even non-musician), feel free to visit a really cool and good-sized musician's forum: www.harmony-central.com (may have to copy and paste the link). My moniker there is rushtallica.
I liked the new Slipknot to some degree but will stick with older Slayer for really intense heavy stuff, and I was heavily into older Metallica. Also, I'd add for people into Christian hardcore stuff, Extol and Living Sacrifice are coming out with new discs, I hear, and Deliverance's What a Joke CD rivaled the intensity of anything Metallica put out, IMO, though they were obviously heavily influenced by Metallica.
For music not quite so intense but still somewhat heavy/more alternative, I really like Hum and am still looking into the Mars Volta (a heavily experimental band that even Alex Lifeson of Rush mentioned is on his good-list these days).
I like shred and blues guitar music, such as Steve Vai, Satriani, Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen, Cacophony, etc., and also like some jazz guitarists a lot like Al DiMeola and Michael Hedges.
[edit:] Oh, yeah; Anthrax just remixed some of their best older material and made it sound heavier; I got to hear a few songs at a recent guitarist competition, and it was awesome~!
